3D printed parts made with ABS filament tend to be more flexible and less liable to shatter than those made with PLA filament. ABS printed parts can go through an acetone vapor bath to provide a smooth and glossy look that eliminates layer lines. A heated bed must be used when printing with ABS 3D printer filament, as it contracts or shrinks when it cools, which can cause warping. Building an enclosure for your printer or using a fully enclosed 3D printer will provide cleaner ABS prints. All ZYLtech filament is sealed with desiccant for storage and freshness.

Pro Tips from the ZYLtech Print Lab

Leveling for ABS filament:

  • If you use the paper method to level, we usually suggest leveling as you would for PLA then setting a Z offset of appx .35mm.  There are also a variety of ABS slurries/bed adhesion products that can help with getting that perfect first layer.

First Layer Adherence:

  • ABS typically is printed with no cooling fan.  Your use case may vary.

Layer Adhesion:

  • ABS 3d printer filament will adhere to itself more efficiently when printed with little to no parts cooling fan.  If you are working with fine detail or bridging, you will have to experiment with parts cooling fan settings for best results.

Stringing and retraction:

  • ABS and PLA typically require similar retraction settings.  You will need to experiment with stringing and retraction test models to dial in your machine’s settings.

    I have had nothing but great results with this so far after 4 prints. The shifting knob for my Mustang printed flawlessly and with ABS using acetone to smooth the print was a breeze. The final print was already fairly smooth and very clean when done printing.

    Great, Affordable ABS

    I threw a spool of blue ABS in with an order for extrusions as it was significantly cheaper than other spools of ABS I had been using and I figured I'd give it a try. The blue was nice but seemed to show some small defects, maybe moisture related, maybe something else but the grey came out very nicely and was easy to print with. I went through the spool in a few days printing organizer boxes for the workshop and plan to order more.

    Tricky!

    This filament is my first time printing with ABS and it took some time to get it going right. First I had issues with adhesion, which seemed to be mostly solved by creating ABS juice (acetone with filament dissolved in it) and applying it to print bed, and also turning off the fan, but then I noticed that the splits are occurring, for instance I printed out little lego skeleton and it split up along the print lines when inserted onto a lego block. Also I got splits happen big time when I paused printing and continued a bit later, so I won't do that anymore with ABS. Since I got open (as opposed to enclosed) printer ABS is probably not the best filament type to use indoors as it has some noxious fumes while it prints. I'm sure the prints will come out better as I experiment and dial in the proper settings for this ABS.
